You know you've been in NY too long...
...when you are driving by Houston, TX and think in your head "How-ston" rather than "Hyoo-ston." We're a couple of hours south of Houston (SoHo) in a little hotel in a little town called Odem (population 2499). The drive today was mostly uneventful. There are some big things because everything's bigger in TX. Tomorrow we head over the border, once we get the oil changed and the Mexico insurance in order.

OK. So, first thing...keep your vehicle in safe places, I KNOW YOU KNOW THIS BUT... and think about your plans if the police or border controls try and make you pay...we saw crazy shit happen to people with cars...have a plan.
ReplyDeleteMake sure when border crossing to have american funds or already have the currency of the country you are entering...if you exchange at the borders...keep up to date with your exchange rates...
My top visit recs:
Mexico
Before Mexico city
-Guanajuato...if you miss this, you are really missing out.
-Oaxaca
-San Cristobal de las casas...another MUST
-Palenque...so worth every second. especially the ruins
-TULUM...most beautiful ruins on the beach...best beach i saw in all C.A.
Belize...if you spend time in belize city...it should be just to go to the islands off the coast...belize city is sketch.
The islands are precious...and if you can dive or snorkel...pay and do it,...best hours of my life in water...
-there are some gorgeous smaller ruins in belize worth seeing...gems...Cahal Pech etc.
but the country is considerably more expensive than the rest of C.A.
guatemala
TODOOOOOOOOOOo...
-DO NOT MISS SUNRISE IN TIKAL...you have to get up ass early, and pay to get up on the ruins...but you will have made the best choice of your whole trip...stay in FLORES...I AM NOT MESSING AROUND.
-L'Antigua...
-YOU MUST must must go to the rasta crazy town of LIVINGSTON....it's a bit difficult to reach...you'd have to maybe live your car on one side and water taxi in....not sure...
-beautiful aquifers and lagoons near Coban city...can't remember the name...
El Salvador
-Also expensive...but hit the coast if you can...there are sometimes special hours, days and fees to go the coastal beaches
-cute town near gorgeous volcano:
SANTA ANA
Honduras
-be careful with the islands...check up on malaria status...drink GIN TONICS...people say it helps...not kidding...
Nicaragua
GO EVERYWHERE
-My favourite...do not stay in Managua with your car if you can help it, I'm sure nother would happen, but, you'll find out...but do see the city centre where earthquake destroyed most things...
-GRANADA
-MASAYA- volcano
-SAN JUAN DEL SUR ---on the beach...if you drive out, be careful, road is killer...if you need a hostal look for CASA FELIZ...Ben, Canadian from Alberta, very cool.
-GO TO THE ISLAND OF OMETEPE...if you don't...you are just wrong...be ready for death ferry...think about safe place for car...
-Go to the ARCHIPIELAGO DE SOLENTINAME...Ernesto Cardenal lives there....not going would be a sin.
